Epilogue

The blue-green waters of the Mediterranean slapped gently at the sides of the ship as it sailed toward the distant horizon. A warm Sirocco wind from the south put their ship on a broad reach as they traveled east. Rona leaned against the rail, face turned into the wind. Pedr smiled indulgently. His wife charmed everyone she met, and had eagerly set out to learn all she could about the countries and customs they encountered along their journey. They’d lingered in each port, exploring cathedrals and gardens, inns and markets.

Her black pirate garb had been exchanged for woolens, silks, and brocades, in both fine feminine fashions and more manly garb better suited for life aboard ship. Currently, her long tunic fell to her thighs, disguising her rounded belly carrying their first child.

Rona faced him, her cheeks red from the sun and wind, eyes sparkling with excitement. “Yer son is verra active this day.” She pressed a palm to her side.

He crossed the deck and placed his hand next to hers. The bairn kicked vigorously. He grinned. “My daughter is a fighter—like her ma.”

“Do ye truly wish a daughter?”

“I truly wish ye both safe in my arms.”

Rona squinted her eyes. “Another two months, I should think.”

Pedr pressed a kiss to the side of her neck. “I can wait.”

She tilted her head to the side and sighed happily. “When will we make port?”

“In a few hours,” he reminded her, his mind on the hair tickling his nose and the scent of roses rising from her skin.

Rona drew his face to hers and placed a kiss on his lips. “Follow me.”

With the tang of salt in the air and swaying boards beneath his feet, Pedr was quite certain he’d follow his pirate bride anywhere.
